Addressing healthy settings in Malawi
Mfera health centre is the core centre for health access for the SCHI programme villages. Built 15 years ago the health facility provides primary health care services including maternal and reproductive health services with a team of medical assistants, nurses and health surveillance assistants. Although relatively recently built the centre was constructed with inappropriate materials and the roofing tiles which were provided (suitable for deserts and low rain fall) have become severely damaged. This led to poor service provision in the rainy season when tiles were saturated and the rooms leaking.
Scottish Government and FROM Scotland funds were combined through SCHI to provide a new roof to the out patient and public health departments in December 2013 – just in time for the rains. Services can now resume effectively all year round.
