Addressing healthy settings in Malawi
As a means to improve capacity and enhance performance of Health Promoting Schools in target areas, the SCHI HPS team organised an orientation for school stakeholders. This is part of the effort to ensure participation of stakeholders in the health setting project which is in nature, “community led”.
The training aimed to officially introduce HPS concepts to the teams and stakeholders for the purpose of managing HPS activities in schools, establishing coordination between school stakeholders and team but also imparting leadership with regard to HPS programmes. It also aimed to gain commitment of school stakeholders to the HPS concept through introduction of Health Promoting Schools Charter and to establish a support system for the Health promoting teams through advocacy and linking with the invited stakeholders.
Held over three days, the orientation broke into groups of government staff and teachers, students and parent teacher associations to ensure wide sensitisation and future participation. The orientations attracted key stakeholders from the Ministry of Health; Health Surveillance Assistants for Mfera area, Youth Friendly Health Services coordinators from Chikwawa District Health Offices, Officials from Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Chikwawa District School Health and Nutrition coordinator, Agriculture Extension Officers, teachers, students and community members.
SCHI intends to create Health promoting schools as part of the health settings project which aims to impact determinants of health in Mfera community as a whole. Since the training, target schools have begun development of school based health policy, developing clubs for learners, renovations of their physical environments, among other planned activities.
